The Pierce County Jail accepts inmates from surrounding municipalities and towns. They accept many inmates from the Tacoma Police Department since they currently do NOT have their own long-term lock-up area for inmates.
The facility is operated and managed by the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.
The facility is a minimum-security facility. The Pierce County Jail is located in Tacoma, Washington.
While the Pierce County Jail is a full-service detention center, they operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
All correctional officers working in the Pierce County Jail are equipped with mace. They are also trained to use physical force to not only protect themselves but other inmates and visitors.
Majority of the inmates in the facility are non-violent offenders. They typically carry a 2 year or less sentence. The facility does not only house inmates who have sentences, they also house inmates who are currently awaiting their trial also.
If an inmate is convicted and sentenced for more than 2 years, they will typically be transferred to a federal prison or the Washington State Prison.
