The Washington County Jail is licensed as a Class III Jail. The Washington County Jail is operated under the Virginia Department of Corrections as a secure detention center. The facility houses both pre-trial and sentenced inmates.
The Washington County Jail houses pre-trial, sentenced, work release, and STS inmates. The facility only houses adult male and adult female inmates. This is where inmates can venture off in the community to work on a variety of service projects. STS is a program that is court ordered.
Alongside Darren Ferrell, they have a highly trained staff that helps with the day to day business operations. The Washington County Jail is operated and managed by Darren Ferrell, the Jail Administrator. All staff that is employed at the Washington County Jail must undergo the required state of Virginia Training Board Certified 200 Hour Academy.

There are an additional 20 inmates every day that is serving time with the Electronic Home Detention. The Interim Work Center is also known as the low-medium custody facility. The Washington County Jail also has an Interim Work Center.
