The history of the San Juan County Jail dates back over a century ago. The old facility was constructed in around 1910. The facility was made out of brick. It has the Renaissance Revival style. The facility back then was a three-story jail and had a one-story porch alongside thin columns and brick piers. Many people say that this old San Juan County Jail is a haunted facility.
The facility held many, many inmates over the years. They’ve even done their fair share of executions as well. The last execution that happened in the facility was back in 1949. This old San Juan County Jail closed their doors back in 2007 and sat empty since then.
Fast forward to the present time, in the 2000s, the county decided that they needed a bigger and better facility to house their inmates. San Juan County’s new jail is state of the art. They house adult male and adult female inmates. The female inmate population has grown to about 10-percent in the San Juan County Jail alone.
The San Juan County Jail is in Monticello, Utah. The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office is the law enforcement agency in charge of the day to day operation of the San Juan County Jail. There is a total of 22,512 living inside the county.
