The Dewey County Jail is situated in Timber Lake, South Dakota. The Dewey County Sheriff’s Office is the law enforcement agency responsible for maintaining the day to day operations of the Dewey County Jail.

The Dewey County Jail is a medium-security facility. The facility operates on a 24 hours a day basis. The Dewey County Jail accepts inmates from other law enforcement agencies on a local, state, and even federal level.  The Dewey County Jail frequently takes in inmates from the Timber Lake Police Department as they do not have their own lockup.

The majority of the inmates housed in the Dewey County Jail are waiting for their trial to start, going through their trial, and inmates who are waiting to be sentenced. There is a handful of inmates that have already been sentenced. The Dewey County Jail will only keep inmates if they have a sentence shorter than two years. If an inmate is a sentence to a sentence longer than two years, they will be transferred to a state prison in South Dakota.

The Dewey County Jail has what they call a Pay for Stay. The Pay for Stay is where the inmate will be required to pay for the time they serve. When an inmate is booked into the Kandiyohi, they will be signing a form that acknowledges that they understand there is a charge of $20 per day. The inmate will have a 20% discount if they pay their bill in full between 7 days of when they are released from the facility. If an inmate does not pay within the 7 days, the Dewey County Jail will send it to a collection agency.
