The Marion County Correctional Facility was first constructed back in July of 1956 under the supervision of Sheriff Ross Boyer.  The cost of this newly constructed facility was nearly $318,000. This also included an apartment for Boyer along with his family on the second floor of the facility.  Boyer lived on the second floor of the jail until July of 1962. This was due to the fact that staffing of the facility was increasing and the need for him to live right above the jail was diminishing.

As of today the facility went under many major renovations this structure, which once was the Old Courthouse is now the Clerk of the Court among other offices, even includes a few courtrooms. The most current renovation was all about recreating the original style of the courthouse back in its original glory.

Back in August of 1975, while the Sheriff on duty was Jim Hardcastle, they decided to build a second jail. This jail cost nearly $5.3 million. This second jail could hold another 214 inmates. This second jail is still in use today. It’s known as the “West Wing.” As of now, this wing currently is the female and new inmate arrival wing.

Back in June of 1987, while the Sheriff on duty was Geoffrey Monge, they decided to open the “East Wing” portion of the jail that cost nearly $12.2 million. This wing brought an additional 540 inmate beds. This wing consists of the main housing section for juveniles, males, punitively and administrative segregating inmates. The recreation section is on the roof of this wing.

Back in November 2002, they constructed the “North Wing”. This cost nearly $15.5 million. This wing was the direct supervision wing. With this wing, they also included a medical housing area that can hold nearly 32 inmates, a new kitchen area, administrative offices, and inmate video visitation.

The facility has a total of 76 programs and services they offer their inmates. Some of these programs and services include the following:

  • Personal Insight
  • Free to Grow
  • Anger Management
  • Parenting Classes
  • Educational Programs
