The Yancey County Jail that you see today opened its doors back in July of 1985. The facility cost nearly $4.5 million. The funding for this facility was provided by Proposition 4. This was the first of three funding measures when it comes to jails.
Two of these dorms can hold up to 92 inmates each. The facility includes three medium-security dorms. The other one of the dorms can hold up to 44 inmates. The facility also has one maximum-security housing unit that can hold up to 32 inmates.
In 1990, the federal court gave an order restricting their daily population to around 148. This new addition cost around $3.5 million, with the construction funding by Propositions 52 and 96. However, they added a 260-bed addition to the Yancey County Jail. This new addition opened its doors in April of 1992.
All medical treatments are done by licensed professional doctors and nurses. All inmates who are in the custody of Yancey County Detention Center will have the opportunity to have medical care.
However, inmates are not just from this city, but cities all throughout the county and even people from other counties are in the Yancey County Detention Center. Many of the inmates that are in the facility come right from the Burnsville Police Department. This police department does not have its own long-term holding cells as this facility does.
