The Robeson County Jail was not always the nice state of the art facility you see today. There was an older facility that closed its doors back in 2011 when the new facility opened.

The old facility had a lot of history throughout the years. The old Robeson County Jail typically booked anywhere between 300 to 325 inmates every single day. This facility was the old style. They had the metal bars and a linear hallway between cells. This allowed for inmates to throw things at the correctional officers as they walked the hallway and did their surveillance.

The old Robeson County Jail use to book and process around 7,000 inmates every year. When broken down they would book and process around 583 inmates a month. The inmates typically came from a variety of law enforcement agencies including the following:

• Lumberton Police
• Robeson County Sheriff’s Office
• Kannapolis Police
• N.C. Highway Patrol

The new Robeson County Jail will be able to house up to 569 adult male and adult female inmates. When you add in the jail annex that is situated next door, the total number of inmates will be around 410.
