The Gates County Jail is a medium-security facility. The Gates County Sheriff’s Office is the law enforcement agency responsible for the day to day operation of the Gates County Jail. Mike Cleveland, head Sheriff is the officer in charge of overseeing all operations. Cleveland was elected back in July of 2000 and sworn into office in January 2001.
Inmates are released when they post bail, placed under probation, or on their own recognizance. The facility booked nearly 7,000 individuals back in 2012 alone. The Gates County Jail receives new inmates to the jail daily. While new inmates are coming in, there are also inmates leaving as well.
There are a handful of inmates in the facility that are serving out their sentence. If an inmate is sentenced to a sentence for more than two years, they will be transferred to state prison in Georiga. Majority of the inmates in the Gates County Jail are inmates currently waiting for their trial to start, going through their trial, or inmates waiting to be sentenced. Inmates who are serving out their sentence will have a sentence of two years or less.
