The Kings County Jail that you see today opened its doors back in July of 1985. The facility cost nearly $4.5 million. The funding for this facility was provided by Proposition 4. This was the first of three funding measures when it comes to jails.

The New York State Board of Corrections permitted this original structure to house up to 108 inmates; however, this total was fulfilled immediately. This happened within two months of the jail opening.

By 1990, the Kings County Jail inmate population went up to 272 inmates, this happened to be far above what the New York State Board Corrections allowed.

In 1990, the federal court gave an order restricting their daily population to around 148. However, they added a 260-bed addition to the Kings County Jail.  This new addition opened its doors in April of 1992. This new addition cost around $3.5 million, with the construction funding by Propositions 52 and 96.

The facility includes three medium-security dorms. Two of these dorms can hold up to 92 inmates each. The other one of the dorms can hold up to 44 inmates. The facility also has one maximum-security housing unit that can hold up to 32 inmates.

All dormitory housing units are direct-supervision style. They all have a correctional officer station inside each of the housing dorms, with another indirect supervision from the housing booth as well.
