The Mississippi County Jail is located in Charleston, Missouri. The Mississippi County Jail is operated and managed by the Mississippi County Sheriff’s Office.
There are around 110 inmates housed in this facility at a given time. The Mississippi County Jail also provides a Work Center which is a separate facility that holds Work Detail Inmates and the Work Release, inmates.
The facility frequently takes inmates from the Charleston Police Department since they do not have their own personal long-term lockup. The Mississippi County Jail accepts inmates from other law enforcement agencies on a local, state, and even federal level.
All violent and out of control inmates will be separated from the general population inmates to keep the peace inside the facility at all times.
You will see a plain two-story white building. This plain building was built back in 1938 for the jail of the Mississippi County. During this time the second floor of the facility holds around 13 jail sells. In the northeast corner of the Mississippi County, you’ll find the living quarters where the county sheriff stays. The Mississippi County Jail is nestled on the southeast corner in the Mississippi County Courthouse Square. Back in the day, all of the cooking was done by the sheriff’s wife.
