The Women’s Correctional Facility, also known as the Lake Charles Detention Center, is located in Lake Charles. Louisiana.
Women’s Correctional Facility was built in 1998, and when opened, there were only 36 inmate beds.
In 2000, the detention center expanded and currently has the capacity to hold 120 inmates.
Operated by the Calcasieu Parish County Sheriff’s Office, the Women’s Correctional Facility houses male and female inmates who are awaiting trial or sentencing. Most of the sentenced inmates are there for less than two years.
Women’s Correctional Facility is a medium to a maximum-security facility. Each year this facility has around 2400 bookings, with a daily average of 120 inmates and around 30 staff. Offenses range from minor misdemeanors to major felonies.
The jail is divided into “pods,” each of which includes individual cells (2-3 inmates per cell), sitting areas, and an outside recreation court where inmates can play basketball or work out.
Inmates receive three meals a day, which are approved by a dietician.
Inmates also receive education programs and a TV in the sitting area. Inmates are allowed one hour of recreation time a day. This jail also provides work release program and other specialized services to the inmates.
