The St. James Parish Prison is located in Convent, Louisiana. The St. James Parish Prison is operated and managed by the St. James Parish County Sheriff’s Office.
All violent and out of control inmates will be separated from the general population inmates to keep the peace inside the facility at all times.
Out of the 1,100, jail cells over 280 of them are designed to hold the highest security level, inmates. St. James Parish Prison has over 2,000 beds and 1,100 jail cells.
In April 2016, the Guernsey county started contracting with premier physicians services to help provide inmates health care while in jail. These services include a doctor going to jail on a weekly basis, alongside a full-time nurse and two part-time nurses.
Inmates are served three meals a day, and all meals are approved by a dietitian.
Trustees are inmates who work in the St. James Parish County detention center as cooks, housekeepers, cooks, or in the commissary. Some even earn days off of their sentences by working as trustees. These inmates have earned the respect of the jail officers and are paid a very small amount for their time.
The St. James Parish Prison will hold ALL inmates that were arrested by any of the law enforcement agencies in the county.
