Run by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, The Marion County Jail opened 30 years ago in 1989. The facility began with a capacity of approximately 300 inmates and averaged about 270 inmates daily.
It currently houses a maximum capacity of 1650 inmates who are held in nine connecting housing units, plus the Receiving and Discharge/Transport unit. The Corrections Department currently employs 400 workers. It has come a long way since 1989.
The Operations Division of Marion County Jail is responsible for the day to day operations of the jail. This division manages the facility and keeps inmate population at a controllable level.
The Operations Division is also responsible for managing contract providers for departments of the jail such as medical, programs, commissary, and kitchen. This area also encompasses Receiving and Discharge, transport, and the Records Unit.
The Marion County Jail offers inmates programs, such as work release, basic life skills, substance abuse (including AA and NA meetings), a GED program, and Chaplain services.
Since 1989, this facility has maintained accreditation from the Corrections Bureau by the American Correctional Association. Presently, they are one of only two facilities in the State of Indiana to hold this accreditation.
