The Jefferson County Jail is located in Madison, Indiana. The facility is operated and ran by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department.
The Jefferson County Jail first opened its doors back in 1989. During this time, the jail could only hold a maximum of 30 inmates.
Shortly after they opened their doors, they started to expand by adding more housing units, which brought their total from 30 inmates up to 102 inmates.
The Jefferson County Jail does not the only house sentenced inmates. They also house inmates who are awaiting their trial. These inmates have been arrested in Jefferson County. However, at times, the Jefferson County Jail will also house federal inmates and inmates that are from Cook County.
The jail is one of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department main task by the Indiana State Constitution. Justin Hartman, Chief of Corrections is one of the supervisors that oversee the correctional officers in the Jefferson County Jail.
The jail offers its inmates medical attention when needed, three meals a day, visits from family or friends, and personal hygiene products.
The jail is responsible for booking inmates, inmate transport, inmate medical screenings, shakedowns, cell checks, and court security.
Inmates in the Jefferson County Jail can receive one visitor per day.
