San Luis Obispo County Jail opened its doors back in 1994. The reason for the detention center was to provide a safer community for all involved. With the new State REgulations rolling out, the county jail that was standing prior to San Luis Obispo County Jail wasn’t able to meet all of these requirements set forth.
Majority of the inmates that are already sentenced have sentences less than two years. The San Luis Obispo County Jail accepts inmates from surrounding municipalities and towns when there are no rooms in city jails.
There were many agencies involved with the planning including the San Luis Obispo County Jail Administrators, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff, Thomas Altiere, and many other agencies to make this dream become a reality. This new facility that is now known as the San Luis Obispo County Jail took many years of careful planning.
All violent and out of control inmates will be separated from the general population inmates to keep the peace inside the facility at all times.
