The Alpine County Jail was built back in 1973. The facility is a maximum-security jail. The Alpine County Sheriff’s Department is responsible for maintaining and operating the Alpine County Jail.
The Alpine County Jail houses pre-trial, sentenced, work release, and STS inmates. STS is a program that is court ordered. This is where inmates can venture off in the community to work on a variety of service projects. The facility only houses adult male and adult female inmates.
The Alpine County Sheriff’s Office will arrest around 25,000 people every year. Not all of these people will be booked and processed through the Alpine County Jail.
Medical care is available for inmates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They will also have a few single cells for inmates who need to stay overnight for further treatment. All medical staff is licensed. Inmates in the Alpine County Jail will have access to medical care.
This addition consists of another 19 detention beds added, a bigger intake section, office space for the sheriff’s office and jail, and a video visitation area. This new addition was to the courthouse and the detention center. In 2017, the facility saw yet another new addition.
The facility operates 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. The facility frequently takes inmates from the Markleeville Police Department since they do not have their own personal long-term lockup. The Alpine County Jail accepts inmates from other law enforcement agencies on a local, state, and even federal level.
