The Maricopa County 4th Avenue Jail is also known as the Main Jail facility. The building was built back in 1979. The facility saw new additions in 1988 and 1999. The Maricopa County 4th Avenue Jail can house up to 2064 inmates at any given time.

The jail also includes a release center and an intake center. The jail is not only home to those who have already been convicted of their crimes. The facility also houses inmates who are currently going through the judicial system as well.

In July of 2013, due to an increase of funding in the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Division, the jail was able to open housing areas that were previously closed due to the lack of funding.

When an inmate is going through the intake process, they will be classified. The Corrections Division classifies inmates based on a few factors. These factors include their past criminal charges (if any), current criminal charges, past institutional behavior, and a few other undisclosed factors. Based on these findings the inmate will either be housed in a cell by themselves or in a dormitory style housing.

Every day inmates will get three nutritious meals, have the opportunity to use the telephone, shower, and purchase items from the facilities commissary. They will be giving clean bed linens and clothes twice a week.

Depending on the classification level the inmate has, they may have access to the television daily and they may have access to outside recreation on a weekly basis.

Inmates will also have access to psychiatric, medical, and dental care when needed as well.
