The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is the law enforcement agency responsible for operated and managing the Sedgwick County Youth Aftercare Program.

The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is mainly made up of inmates currently waiting for their trial within the Sedgwick County. Not all inmates are residents of the county, but a good majority is.

This facility is an adult detention facility that also accepts inmates from nearly 30 other law enforcement agencies on a local, state or federal level.

In 2017, the Sedgwick County Youth Aftercare Program has a daily inmate population around 1085. The Sheriff’s Office main mission is to try and reduce the inmate population by providing them with proactive, yet innovative release programs to help them not re-offend again.  Some of these release programs include a court-sponsored pretrial release alongside community-based work programs that are operated through the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.

The detention center also has a special housing unit for inmates who may have special needs. This unit will help treat these inmates who have special needs and not put them out in the general public housing. These units come equipped with some helpful Mental Health workers alongside a few Sheriff’s who went through specialized Crisis Intervention Training.

The Sedgwick County Youth Aftercare Program was one of the first direct-supervision facilities built in the United States. This paved the way for the next generation of facilities. This facility is often times used as an example for many other governmental agencies who are looking to build new jails.
