The Lea County New Mexico Detention Center is a medium level security detention center located in Lovington, NM. Operated by the Lea County Sheriff’s office, this county jail holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates serve two years or less at this jail. Lea County accepts inmates from surrounding towns.

Trustees are inmates who work in the Lea County detention center as cooks, housekeepers, cooks, or in the commissary. These inmates have earned the respect of the jail officers and are paid a very small amount for their time. Some even earn days off of their sentences by working as trustees.

When an inmate arrives in jail, he or she is put together in a large holding cell with other inmates during booking. The inmates are watched closely during this time to see if they will be put in the general population or isolated. Violent and out of control inmates are segregated.

The jail is divided into “pods,” each of which includes individual cells, common areas, and an outside recreation court. There are two to three inmates per cell.

Inmates are served three meals a day, and all meals are approved by a dietitian.
