The Alleghany County Sheriff’s Office is the agency in charge of the Alleghany Regional Jail VA. The Alleghany Regional Jail VA is mandated by the Virginia Law, but the sheriff’s office is the agency responsible for maintaining the facility up to the Oregan state standards.

The Alleghany Regional Jail VA main mission is to provide a safe and secure facility that is not only professional but operates efficiently and respectfully for their inmate’s and staff members.

The Alleghany Regional Jail VA does not only house inmates who have already been sentenced. They also house inmates who are waiting for their trial and waiting for their sentencing as well. Most inmates who have already been sentenced will carry a 2 year or less sentence.

The facility opened its doors back in May 1989. When the jail opened they could only hold 114 inmates at any given time. This facility replaced the jail at the courthouse that the county was using since 1939. This jail could only hold 24 inmates at any given time.

Throughout the years the facility kept expanding. It wasn’t until the last renovation in April of 2015 where they can now house up to 230 inmates.

On a regular year, the jail can expect to book and process nearly 6,000 people along with housing around 550 inmates.
