The Westmoreland County Prison was built back in 1941. The facility is nestled on the fourth floor of the Westmoreland County Courthouse.

The Westmoreland County Prison is licensed to have 14 beds along with a holding cell where the facility will keep its short-term arrestees. The short-term area can house up to another 5 inmates. With the recent increase of incarcerations, the Westmoreland County Prison has increased its inmate capacity from 14 long-term beds up to 27 long-term beds.

Back in 2013, the Pennsylvania State Department of Corrections Chief Jail Inspector, Delbert Longley announced to the Sheriff and the Board of Supervisors that the Westmoreland County Prison was not meeting the necessary needs of the public, inmates, or staff members. The layout of the jail was not user-friendly whatsoever, while the jail did not provide a safe working environment for the staff members. In 10-15 years, the Westmoreland County Prison lost its “grandfathered” status.

The losing of the status brought on research for a potential remodeling of the old facility, whether it was to renovate their current space or build a whole new facility.

Having a jail on the fourth floor of the Westmoreland County Courthouse poses many security and safety concerns for everyone involved.  As of late, the plans for either an overhaul of the existing space and plans for a new facility are still in the works.
